CHESS

NGAIO AND WADESTOWN The first chess match between the above suburbs took place at Ngaio on Tuesday evening, and proved very enjoyable. Mr F. J. Brooker (president of the Ngaio Chess Club), in extending a welcome to the 1 visitors, expressed pleasure at the launching of this new fixture. At Ngaio a beginning had been made with a chess circle, and this had subsequently developed into a healthy club. He trusted that a similar expansion would take place in Wadestown. Perry v-ere unfortunately unable to assist Wadestown in this pioneer effort. WORKING MEN’S CLUB. The annual handicap chess, tourney of this club lias been won by Mr 8. Faulknor, after a very close finish. The leading, scores, after cancelling the games of three entrants who dropped out before qualifying, are as followS.

Faulknor, 12.1 wins, 2J losses; W. Wring, 12 —3: .T. Burgess, 111 —3); G. Walker, 10—5; J. Martin, 10—5; .T. McEwan, 9—16: R. Williams, 71—71; W. Bosher, 7J —74. The Rosenberg Handicap Tourney, open to players in the intermediate and junior grades, was handsomely won by Mr T. Nolan, who scored the possible (10—0). The next best talttes are: —I Martin, B—2;8 —2; G. Walker, 5 —5; J. Coulter, 41—dl, and H. Anderson, 41 —41DRAUGHTS. The annual draughts tourney of the Working Men’s Club comprises . 11l games, of which 140 have been played. The four games outstanding ire these of the fixture Corbett v. Costello'. When these have been accounted for (l-.o envelope containing tho sealed handicaps can be opened and the prize-list announced.
