“ARIKI TOA”

HISTORIC. RESIDENCE HOME OF PRIME MINISTERS IN THE CAPITAL CITY Ariki Toa, the Ministerial residence in Tinakori road, which is so closely associated with the political history of New Zealand, is being renovated, and in the course of a very few weeks the Hon. J. G. Coates will take up his abode there. The residence, erected in the early days of the colony, has housed a number of the men whose names have passed into history, and in later years has generally been regarded as the home of the Prime Minister. Mr Seddon did not use it, but honoured the old house in Moleaworth street with the presence of himself and his family. Sir Joseph Ward, however, lived there during his term as Prime Minister, Mr Massey occupied it in his day, and now Mr Coates will “move in” in the course of a very little while.
