The three mile swimming race for the Annette Kellerman Cup was held in the inner harbour this afternoon, ten swimmers counpeting and seven finishing Result:— A. Bolan (Canterbury, 12Jmin) 1 J. Enwright (Auckland, last year’s winner, lmm) 2 W. G. Morpeth (Wellington, 25min) 3 Time, lhr 41min 23 2-ssec. Enwright made fastest time, . lhr 32mm 20sec; D. W. The Wigram Shield for life-saving was competed for to-day by Canterbury and Wellington, and won by the former by 71 points to 54. NOTES ONTHECONTEST MORPETH’S GOOD EFFORT. (By Telegraph.—Special to “Tim**.”) NAPIER, January 28. - The principal event to-day in the swimming championship carnival was the race of three miles for Uie Annette Kellerman cup. It was held in the Inner Harbour over a triangular course which had been measured out in three distances to the mile, so that the competitors had to pass the starting point twice and finish there a third time. There were ten competitors, Baird, Lindsay, and Riordan. not starting, and the others left at the due. intervals. The limit competitor was close on the second peg (two-thirds of a mile) when McKeague, of Gisborne, off the six minutes mark plunged into the water, followed five minutes later by the holder of the title, Jack Enwright. At the end of the first mile Morpeth was leading from Miss Edser, followed by Bolam, and Regan (who did the mile in 32min 32sec), Plumtree, Tooiney, Russell, McKeague, Kell, and Enwright. When well into the second mile, Miss Edser gave way to Bolam and before the end of the second distance fell back to second to last place. Passing the post at the end of the second mile Morpeth was in the lead, followed by Bolam, Plumtiee, Ryan (whose time waa 28min 31sec), Kell, Enwright, McKeague, Miss Edser and Tooiney.
Shortly after entering on the final mile Ryaa pulled out owing to cramp and was followed later by Russell and Tooiney. In the final mile Morpeth was overhauled by Bolam before the first peg had been reached and between the first and second pegs, Enwright passed Kell. Despite the gallant effort by the title holder, who overhauled Plumtree, he could not catch' Bolam. who won by over one hundred yards. The other were as stated. Enwright put up the fastest time (92min 20sec) with McKeague nc-xt best (99min 42*ec). Morpeth’s time was 117 min 39sec. Morpeth’s mile times were 37min 53seo for the first, 39min 4seo for the second, and ‘ 40min 42seo for the last. Enwright’s miles were covered as follow: First, 30min 53see; second, 30min 32seo; third, 30 min 55sec. McKeague did the fastest mile of the day. He covered the last mile in 29 min 33sec. McKeague put up the second fastest time over the course. •
