VAST BUSH FIRES

Hugo bush fires ate raging beyond the Murrumbidgee. A strong wind is driving the flames towards the con** fluence of the Cotter and th© Murrumbidgee, and if the fir© crosses th© river tli© bush around the Cotter dam and the great pine plantations on Mount Stromio will be m grave danger, and Canberra will be threatened. Volunteer l ; from Canberra have been rushed to the scene of the outbreak. Fires are raging in the Bathurst district also, and causing heavy damage. VICTORIA AFFECTED, TOO (Received January 28, 8.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 28. Bush fires in the eastern ranges are causing extensive damage, and residents are fleeing before the flames. The hush fire has now passed the Miirrumbidgee, and is approaching the north-west slopes of Mount Stromio, on the slopes of which are pine plantations that cost huge sums, and on the top of which is the Commonwealth observatory. Men are being gathered from all parts of the district, and rushed to the scene.
