LIFE-SAVING CONTEST
DEMONSTRATION IN SURF WIN FOR MARANUI. Per Press Association. NAPIER, January 26. The annual, life-saving competition for the Nelson Shield was held off the Marine Parade to-day. An interesting contest resulted in Maranui (Wellington) annexing the shield from the holders (Lyall Bay) by a narrow margin of two points. The positions of the competing teams were:— Maranui, 165 points 1 Lyall Bay, 163 points 2 Canterbury, 147 points 3 Gastlecliff (Wanganui), 144 points 4 Taranaki, 143 points 5 Hawke’a Bay, 122 points ' 6 ALL ROUND EFFICIENCY VICTORS’ SPLENDID LAND DRILL. (By Telegraph.—Special to “Times.”) NAPJER, January 26. There were calm conditions for the Nelson Surf Shield, and a larger surf would have shown the capabilities of the watermen to better advantage. Maranui won through all-round efficiency and gave a splendid exhibition of land drill. Murrell, second, Sleeman, third, Clark, reelsman, and Hughes, captain. Their times were 7sec slower than Lyall Bay, who had Claridge for support and Canham in the kit. It was an excellent competition, all th© teams showing a very high standard of efficiency. NORDEN CUP The competition for the Norden Cup will take place at Te Aro baths at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday next. The following team will represent Wellington: Claridge, Murrell, Cameron (2), Paterson, Leask, and Fletcher; emergencies, Fordham and Mollier. N.S.W.
