SPORTSMEN IN CHURCH

HOBBS DECLINES TO READ THE LESSON BUT TAKES UP COLLECTION* Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, January 25. J. B. Hobbs, the famous cricketer, replying to an invitation to read the lesson at a sportsmen’s service at St. Mark’s Church at Mitcham, said: “I would rather face the Australian bowling for three weeks than read a lesson in church.” Hobbs instead took up the collection. D. J. Knight, the Surrey cricketer, read the lesson. The Rev. Mr Roberts, a popular Rugby referee, conducted the service, and the Rev. W. W. Hough, Bishop of Woolwicli, preached the sermon.
