A MODERN CAIN?
SENSATION IN GERMANY SHOT THROUGH HEART BARON CHARGED WITH MURDER Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 26, 7.35 p.m.) LONDON, January 26. The “Daily Express” correspondent in Berlin says that a trial commenced at Tuebingen is causing a sensation in Germany. Baron Manfred Vontessin, aged 27, formerly an officer of Uhlans, and his brother Kurt, aged 17, are accused of murdering their elder brother, Baron Walter Vontessin, 18 months ago. While deer stalking Walter was shot through the heart from behind. It was at first thought that the gun went off in an accident, but Manfred commenced to spend most of his time with his brother’s widow, cansing her kinsmen to resent his behaviour. During an altercation Manfred angrily threatened to kill one relative—“as I killed my brother.” He was thereupon arrested. A number of passionate love-letters from Manfred to his brother’s wife have been discovered. The younger brother apparently was Manfred’s tool.
