STREET PAVING

NINE MILES COMPLETED REPORT ON PROGRESS OF WORK MEETING OF THE BOARD The following report was submitted to the monthly meeting of the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Board held yesterday. The Mayor (Mr C. J. B. Norwood) presided:— The plans for the reconstruction of the 1} miles of road in the Hutt County north of the Lower Hutt borough have been completed and are now being considered by the 1 . Main Highways Board. Tentative approval had. been given for the paving of this section to proceed immediately. Preparation work is in hand along the Queen’s drive from Lyall'Bay towards Island Bay, also in Evans Bay from Point Jerningham southwards. The paving of the Queen’s drive will commence early ; n January, and later the paving of Evans Bay road will be put in hand joining the finished pavement of Oriental Parade with that of Evans Bay road at Schnapper Point. The widening of Queen’s drive in the vicinity of Haughton Bay is nenring completi m. PREPARATION WORK Considerable preparation work has been carried out on the main road, Hutt County,' but this work has now stopped pending a decision from the Main, Highways Board as to the paving of this length of roadway. Upper Hutt Borough.—A total of 64 chains of roadway has been prepared ok the main road, Upper Hutt borough preparatory to paving. The paving of Oriental Parade was completed during the month of December. This pavem,ent, 3}in in thickness, has a total area of 27,783 square yards; 11,413 square yards were being paved out of the .Wellington city and suburban highways loan, and the balance has been paved out of the 1926 loanPAVING LOAN EXPENDITURE The paving of Whitmore street between Featherston street and Customnou&e quay has been completed. Thorndo»i station approach road: An area of 700 square, yards, has been paved during the month of December on behalf of the Railway Department at cost plus a 10 per cent, basis. Miramar tennis courts: This area of approximately 10,000 square yards was pay e< l ready for play by January 21st. This work is also being carried put at cost plus a 10 per cent, basis. Main read. Lower Hutt: The paving of this road recommenced on December Bth, after repairs to plant (due to fire ae previously reported), had been effected at the mixing plant. The new road alignment at the Golf estate corner has been carried out simultaneously with the result that the paving operations were able to proceed uninterrupted, and this section of the schedule for the Lower Hutt borough is now completed, viz., 162$ chains of pavement, equivalent to 30,466 square yards. A total of 8274 square yards of surfacing was laid during the month of December. Paving work on. this section commenced on December 9th, and a total of 3168 square yards of. pavement, 18 feet in width, was constructed during the month. Of this total 1134 square yards, approximately one-third of course treatment of a total thickness of five inches. The season’s total of paving to Decemebr 31st was given at 127,387 square yards, making a total area paved to date of 9 miles 4 chains. The cost of the Oriental Parade work was given as follow:—Preparation, £1640 2s 7d; paving, £7940 Us 6d; sealing, £l9O 16s lOd; general charges, £2B 9s 3d; legal, clerical, and engineering, £490. Total, £10,290 0s Id.
