Having accommodation for 100 passengers besides 4000 tons of cargo, the motorship Malabar, which arrived at Sydney from England several weeks ago, is the first ocean-going single screw passenger motor-ship to be sent to sea. The vessel was built by Barclay, Curie and Co., the eight-cylindpr Burmeister and Wain engine being supplied by John G. Kincaid and Co., of Greenock. The vessel has a sea speed ,of 14 knots. huddabt-parker"stbamers. After being laid up at Sydney since October of last year, • the Huddart-Par-ker Co.'s passenger steamer Ulimaroa was placed in commission yesterday, and sailed for Auckland, where ehe is due on Tuesday next. The company is also effecting a resumption of the running-of the steamer Riverina and Zealandia in their respective services to Tasmania and Western Australia. The Ulimaroa was held up on October 16th, when on the point of sailing for New Zealand, owing to a claim by the crew for overtime. The decision of Huddart-Parker, Ltd., to lay the vessel up indefinitely was followed shortly afterwards by the paying off of the steamer Zealandia, which was engaged in the Sydney-Fremantle service. The Zealandia was recommissioned in December to fulfil the heavy tourist requirements in the ■ Sydney-Hobart run, and the Riverina was laid up instead. A fall resumption of the three steamers is how announced. BRITISH BARQUE CHARTERED. A charter has been arranged for the British four-masted barque Garthpool, which arrived at Sydney recently from Iquique. She will load a cargo of 4000 tons of wheat at Sydney fbr the United Kingdom or the Continent. NEW PANAMA PACIFIC LINER. An order for a fast, 22,000-ton passenger liner for the New York-Cafifotnia service has been placed with the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydook Co. The new, liner, which will be one of three sisters ships, will be the largest and most luxurious vessel ever constructed in an' American shipyard. She will be fitted with a new type of propelling machinery, known as the turbo-electric drive. This will give her a sea speed of eighteen knots. • She will have accommodation for over 700 passengers and a cargo carrying capacity of 7800 tons. The vessel’s design is based on the new ‘‘Minne’’ class and should meet exacting requirements of service on all voyages. Special attention has been paid to ventilation. With her hull and upper works painted white, the liner should present a very smart appearance. Novel features in the vessel's construction will include large size ports through which automobiles belonging to passengers may be driven on board. • It ie expected that the new- liner will be ready for service in the fall of next year, when she will take her place In the Panama Pacific Lines New York-San Francisco service. MAUNGANUI AT SYDNEY. Cable advice received by the Union Company states that the- intercolonial passenger steamer Maunganui arrived at Sydney noon yesterday from Wellington. She is to leave Sydney again at 3 p.m. on Friday for Auckland, where she is due on February 2nd.

The Moeraki is cxpeoted to clear Bluff on Friday. WAIRUNA FROM 7 PACIFIC COAST. Carrying timber, case oil and general cargo from the P&cibo Coast, the Union Co/s trans-Pacifio steamer W&iruna arrived at Auckland at an early hour on Saturday. On her recent trip the vessel loaded her cargo at Vancouver, Ocean Falls and San Francisco, taking her final departure from the**last named port .on December 28th- Favourable weather was experienced when crossing the Pacific, nothing of an eventful nature occurring. On Wednesday last the weather became rough, the conditions becoming worse on Thursday. The storm reached it height on Sunday afternoon, when the freighter was hove to for three hours. Although quantities of water were shipped, the vessel escaped damage. The Wairuna is to sail to-day for Wellington to continue discharge, and is due hero on Friday. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advise that the Arawa is due at Wellington on Friday to complete discharge of her London cargo and leaves again on February 3rd for Lyttelton to commence Homeward loading. She is scheduled to clear Bluff finally on Fobruary. 12th for London, via Pahama. * HERTFORD TO COMPLETE. To complete loading for Home, the New'Zealand Shipping Company advise that the steamer Hertford leaves Napier on Thursday for Auckland, where she is expected to clear finally on February 2nd for London and West of England ports, via Panama. KENT SAILS^DAYLIGHT. The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Federal steamer Rent completed her loading at Wellington last night and sails at daylight this morning for London, via Panama. KUMARA'S MOVEMENTS. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Kumara, now at Wanganui. roadstead loading for London, leaves on Friday for Lyttelton and Wellington. She is due here on February 3rd, and will sail on February 4th for Napier,' Opua and Auckland, to fill up. The Kumara will sail finally from Auckland on February 13th for London, via Panama. THE CANADIAN BRITISHER. Now in the south completing her discharge and loading, the Canadian Government Line advise that the steamer Canadian Britisher returns to Wellington on February sth from Napior'to take in cargo. She leaves . again on February Bth for Auckland, where she completes loading, and sails on February lltn for New York, Boston and Halifax. PORT MELBOURNE'S” ITINERARY. The C. and D. Line advise that the steamer Port Melbourne leaves Bluff today for Lyttelton, - thence Auckland, Gisborne, Napier and Wellington, and is to sail finally from here on February 17th for London, via Monte Video. PORT HUNTER FOR PICTON. To complete her loading for Home, the C. and D Line advise that the steamer Port Hunter leates Picton on Thursday for Wanganui and Wellington, and is to sail finally from hero on February 6th for London, via Panama, MARTABAN FOR WANGANUI. The C. and D. Line advise that the steamer Martaban leaves Dunedin this afternoon for Wanganui, to complete ber discharge of New York cargo. PORT DUNEDIN THROUGH PANAMA. The C. and D.
