CRIMINAL’S RECORD
Three days after his release from prison, John Ryan (68), labourer, was arrested for breaking into Messrs, belfridge’s shop and stealing watches. When charged at London Sessions with the theft, and with being an habitual criminal, it was stated that Ryan was first sentenced by courtmartiaf in India in 1885. He had since spent more than 20 years in penal servitude, and many more years in prison. He was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude and five years’ preventive detention.
