WITH THE RIFLE

“DAILY MAIL” COMPETITION The Suburbs Defence Rifle Club held its annual “Daily Mail” competition on Friday, January 22nd, on the. Broadway range, Miramar, over the. 300, 500, 600, 700, and 800 yards ranges. In the forenoon, the short-' range shoot took place, in most perfect weather conditions. The put np by several of the marksmen were very fine indeed, eleven men putting up a gun total of 90 or over and 21 registering 90 and over, including handicaps. Rifleman T. Kidd,, with a gun score of 98, plus 4 handicap, .was the winner of the short-range aggregate. The conditions after lunch were not so favourable, and consequently several of the leading shots fell dway. However, some very creditable totals were registered. Rifleman S. J. White, a junior shot, carried off the long-range aggregate with a total of 101, ineluding handicap. The coveted trophy, the “Daily Mail” Cup, was again won by. Rifleman J. Smart, with , a grand total over all ranges of 191 off the rifle, the runner-up being Rifleman T. Goodall, with . 185. During the afternoon Sir John and Lady Luke, patrons of the ; club, visited the range, being accorded a Very hearty welcome by the members. The president. Mr W. O. Fellingham, announced fhe death of Rifleman J. W. Milroy, 8n ex-New Zealand rifle champion, a telegram of sympathy heinj, sent to the widow and family of the debased marksman.
