WOOL SALES

THE THIRD SERIES DEMAND KEENER BROKERS' REPORTS The followfng are the reports of the various mercantile woo; Drokers on the January sales:— LEVIN AND COMPANY Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., report that the offering was 25,072 hales, and their catalogue was €Ol5 bales. There was a full attendance of buyers, representing all interests. The wool offered was on a par with previous sales this season—lignt in grease, of good cplour, but showing tenderness and thinness of staple. Bidding was brisk, keen, and well distributed —all centres endeavouring to secure their requirements. London had opened on Tuesday with crossbreds firm, but no advance, and this tended to prevent any decided upward movement here. Smarting under heavy the consuming end is stubborn, and it is natural that conservative buying should be the order of the day. However, the competition for all classes of crossbreds was healthy, and the trade is beginning to feci more sure of its ground. The feature of the sale was the competition for super crosbred for America. These were in comparatively small supply*: The indifferent season hod affected the growth, and many of the clips usually suitable were tender. But America was in the position evidently of absolutely requiring some good wools, and those that were fortunately suitable got the benefit of the short supply and the keen demand. Whilst the top price paid was 17d. only id higher than the best in December, the general average of American 46-48’s was fully Id better, and for 44-46’s lid better. 40-44’s supers benefited even more in several instances.

For average crossbreds for the Bradford and Continental trade, there was excellent bidding, but the want ot “spring” in London had its effect nere and prices were not much better than December sale rates. An occasional advance of id, sometimes Jd, and even on some lots Id, was forthcoming, and the market can be quoted firm at a alight advance. Lambs woo? was In strong demand for France, local mills and Bradford, hut with little quotable rise in the actual range, though undoubtedly there was an advance of Id on the hulk. Bellies and pieces which got the full benefit of German competition were frm. A noticeable feature of the bidding was the fact that the second grade wool of many clips would bring more than the first. This was due to the prevail ing tenderness of the finer wools, which eliminated American competition, and turned the demand on the lower counts. Also the best inquiry at the sale was for preparing wools of good staple as against carding wools. Comparatively the best prices of the day were for super 40-44’s —wool show Sig some coarseness, of good length and strength of staple. Hogget wool was tricky. Any deep hoggets of long sonnd staple sold excellently. But other grades of this class, and these were the more prevalent, were hard to quit at December rates. Halfbreds were in small supply, and not of standard quality, consequently we can make no comparisons. Merino showed a fall in sympathy with London. We sold the well-known “Richmond Brook” clipr-top price. was Slfd. The following are the changes on December 11th rates: —

DALGETY AND COMPANY Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, report:— The third Wellington sale has concluded, the total offering being 25,C00 bales made up principally of a good average selection of crossbreds with a fair selection of merinos from Marlborough. The quantity . of super crossbreds fit for TT.S.A. trade.was smaller than usual, and it was early evident that this style of wool was in demand, as bidding on tbe well skirted, light bright parcels was exceptionally keen, buyers clamouring to' secure all lots offered. The 0.8. A. textile trade is at present sound, and wool of a special style and quality is wanted for such, blit it is doubtful if tbe supply is going to be sufficient for the demand. American buyers are at the moment taking a slightly lower grade than formerly, being forced to do so by the scarcity of super parcels. The sale all through was Round, buying being well spread with Bradford chief competitors and largest buyers. The Continent were fairly active, and secured a fair portion of the fine carding qualities, also taking somelow and medium coarse wools. .France was well in the market for good lambs wool and the better quality pieces, and when compared with our _ December sale prices for these appreciated by one penny. AH qualities of good to super crossbreds were higher by id to Id, but the low and medium qualities of top making sorts ean be quoted firm at late rates. Recent advices from London quoted merinos and halfbreds id to lid lower than in December, and this’ decline was reflected in to-day’s sale. We offered a few good Marlborough clips,

and as vendors decided to meet the market a total clearance was effected at prices fully up to London parity. Local mills were the chief buyers of the good to super lots with Bradford taking the medium parcels. From present appearances it seems as if tbe market is now fairly stabilised, and very little change may now take place for the remainder of the selling season. Continental competition has certainly during the January round of the sales been less pronounced than in the November and December sales, and financial stringency doubtless accounts for this. This is giving Bradford an opportunity of securing supplies at a level more nearly approaching the figure at which their tops are selling. It is said that the South American clip this year ha 9 sold much less freely than usual, and these wools are being offered in Bradford at from Id to 2d clear below prices current for similar New Zealand wools. At to-day’s sale good clearances were effected, vendors generally deciding to accept current rates. We sold 95 per cent, of our catalogue. N.Z. FARMERS' CO-OP. Oqr catologue, comprising approximately 2900 bales, mainly consisting of good top-making wools. There was a full attendance of buyer*, representative of Bradford, U.S.A., France, Germany and other Continental countries, local mills, and Dominion scourers. Competition was very keen and at times very animated, especially when the bettter lots in the catalogue came up for sale. In contra-distinction with the sale held last month, competition was well spread, all sections and all countries operating, but the chief strength of the sale was Bradford. This more general competition re-

stilted in a firmer sale than December; ordinary topmaking wools were fully firm, and sometimes a little dearer than last month, while the entrance of the United States for suitable lots made these wools considerably dearer, and the keenest competition was met for these lots. A line of Southdown in our catalogue, branded “Pariroa/' on account of Messrs Hugh Burrell and Son. Feilding, brought 18jd, but was a lot of exceptional quality. To sum up the sale generally* we think growers are to be congratulated on the results, which—it must be admitted—were in most cases slightly in excess of expectations; this was especially the case with strong wools, which were selling well in advance of last month. We sold 92 per cent, of our offering under the hammer. Wright, stephenson and co.

Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report as lollowi—For the third sale of the Wellington series we offered a catalogue of 3210 bales, of which 98 per cent, was sold under the hammer. There was a very full attendance of buyers and splendid competition throughout the sale—seldom indeed have we 6een' a keener or more sustained demand. America, as the seAnon progresses, finds that the quality of wool most suitable for her requirements te In short supply, and she is now compelled to be less discriminating in her selection. As a consequence America's competition was at this sale more general than it has been this 'season, and the effect on prices was most noticeable, France was keen on lambs and pieces, Germany was a consistent and keen buyer of all wools suitable for her requirements and Bradford was the mainstay as usual when conditions are normal. Of late sellers have taken a reasonable view of the situation and are readily meeting the market. The consequence is that many buyers who at the earlier sales were merely spectators, are now actively operating. Compared with, last Bale prices for average wools were np about a halfpenny per pound, American wools were dearer by 'ld, lambs about a halfpenny te a penny up, and good pieces about a halfpenny up., Some of our best prices were Southdown—Challenge, 7 bales, 16jd; Willowpark, 6 bales, l7d; Namoi, 2 bales, 16|d; Maoriland, 1 bale, 16fd; Hinaua, 1 bale, 163 d; Logie, 1 bale, 163 d; Ngakonui, 2 bales; 16|d; Caythorpe, 2 bales, 163 d; CN, 1 bale, 16|d; TW, 1 bale, 163 d. LOAN AND MERCANTILE We submitted a cataolgue of approximately 2400 bales, and succeeded in disposing of 95 per cent, at auction. There was a full atetndance of buyers, and competition throughout the sale was excellent. America operated very keenly for all well-grown bright, sound wools, and this class of staple can be quoted as dearer than the previous sales. Wools of fair staple and good condition, but displaying tenderness of fibre, met with good competition from Bradford and the Continent on about last sale's parity. Pieces and lambs were secured mainly by Continental operators at values showing an increase of one penny per lb. Recent cablegrams from overseas markets have shown coarse tfools as being firmi and this indicated the turn of the market at the Bale on Friday. The position to-day appears to hold more confidence than in December, and we look forward to a maintenance of values at round about present-day parity. The selection of wool submitted opened up in excellent condition, and our catalogue included many superior-grown wools in very light condition. A feature of the sale was the keen competition experienced for all classed ana binned wools, which distinctly proves that it is the grower's advantage to have his wool graded so that it meets with competition from all sections of the trade. Our top price for tha sale was which was secured for the merino clip. The highest prices secured for Romney wools wereMamuku, 16d and 16jd; VM, 16Jd; TS/R, 16d; BAF, 153 d. Crossbred Wool, suitable for the American market, made very good prices. The bidding throughout the sale was general and snirited. and wo practically cleared. the whole of our catalogue under the hammer. Wools of thiß description were probably 1/d per lb higher than our December prices. Super lambs also showed about the same improvement.
