WHY THE SAILORS MUTINIED
OFFICERS STOLE THEIR FOOD EXPOSURE IN B’ERLIN Br Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrigat. Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association. (Received January 24, 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN, January 23. A blow to the Monarchists’ contention that the mutiny on German ships in Kiel harbour in 11)17 was due to political disaffection was given at yesterday's sitting of the Parliamentary committee that is inquiring into the causes of Germany’s collapse. Herr Dittmann, an Independent Socialist, gave evidence that he discovered from official documents that the seamen mutinied, not for political reasons, but because- while they were eating turnips (1917 is known throughout Germany as "Turnip Year”) their officers lived in luxury. Moreover, the officers appropriated eggs, butter, and fats sent for iho men. Tho stokers m particular, complained that they were unable to do heavy work without a ration of tat. In tecalling the five death sentences passed by a court-martial, Herr Dittmann alleged that the trial was not conducted r f ai rly.
