DASHED ON THE ROCKS
ENGLISH LINER’S LIFEBOAT WRECKED AT WANGANUI THIRD OFFICER DROWNED r OTHER MEN STRUGGLE ASHORE, ONE BADLY LACERATED Per Press Association. WANGANUI, January 24. While entering Wanganui Heads at dusk last evening, a lifeboat frorh the liner Kumara, which is anchored in the roadstead, was dashed against the south mole and capsized. The crew of five all got ashore except the third officer, Batty, who was drowned. His body has not yet been found. The seas were rough at the time. The boat was coming to port to pick up the captain, who had been ashore for the day. Leaving the Kumara at 6 p.m., the crew had a trying time making the heads, and battled against wind and sea for two hours. Just when within the moles the boat was swept against the rocks. Three men scrambled on the rocks, and a fourth man, Charles Garvie, was' buffeted against the pile, and was in the water for half an hour, landing some distance to the south. His face was badly lacerated, and he is now in hospital. Batty was not seen after the boat capsized. He was a native of London, and about 2 j years old.
