BORSTAL INMATES

PHOTOGRAPHS IN WEEKLY SIR JAMES PARR’S PROTEST. The ex-Minister for Justice, Sir James Parr, has taken exception to the recent publication in a certain illustrated weekly of photographs of initiates of the Women’s Borstal Institute at Point Halswell. . Sir James stated on Saturday morning that he had noticed some Press criticism of the photographs, and that he had also received a great number of letters from members of the public. “1 should like to say,” said Sir James, “that this photographing of tbe inmates was done during the holidays. Without my knowledge or consent. Further, before I vacated the office of Minister for Prisons last week, I gave such instructions to the officials as will absolutely prevent the recurrence of such a thing. I quitb agree with my correspondent that inmates of reformatory institutions should be free as far as possible from the public , gaze. The Government is, of course, quite opposed to their features being photographed for any public purpose whatever.”
