THE SEASON IN VIENNA

CLOSING OF THE VOLKSOPER DEO BLECH, THE FAMOUS CONDUCTOR. '• Tho 'lasl musical season at Vienna was of a rather provincial character, and Teas not very successful from a musical point of view. Anno Roselle's beautiful voice and lyric style were more suited to the roles of "Madam Butterfly" and "Aida" than to the dramatic explosions of "Tosca," and from Luigi Montesahto, a really notable baritone. Montesanto revealed himself' as a sort of Boknen translated into Italian but tempered by a regard for that vocal finish which is but rarely found in German operatic artists.
