HOLIDAY BOWLS

CENTRE TOURNAMENT RESULT OF FIRST DAY’S PLAY CRACK RINKS GO UNDER It was a pleasant surprise for the bowlers in the Wellington Centre when Saturday morning turned out fine for the opening of the annual Christmas rinks tournament* which is held under the auspices of the centre. There are no valuable prizes for competition, such as are offered in many of the tournaments in the Dominion, the entrants competing purely for the love of the game, and that this aspect of the game has a great number of devotees may be accepted from the fact that no fewer than 60 rinks entered for the event. The evening of Christmas Day proved very 6tormy and a good deal of rain fell in the night, rendering the prospects for the tourney anything but bright. The weather clerk, however, was prevailed upon to shake up the barometer to some purpose, and a drying wind in the early hours of, Saturday morning made the greens quite playable, if a trifie heavy to start. The sunshine of the morning improved them every minute, for keenness was apparent, and when the green caretakers ran the roller over in the luncheon interval the improvement in the afternoon was most noticeable. Most of the greens were playing well by ir o'clock in the morning, and some fighting games were witnessed. The attendance, beyond that of players, at the commencement of. play, 9.15 a.m., was not large, but the president? of the centre, Mr S. M. Stone, and the secretary, Mr R. W. Shallcrass, were among the early arrivals. Mr Stone remarked that it was a pleasant duty to open the centre Christmas tournament. He was' sure they would find the green in good order, especially those who happened to he winning. (Laughter.) He was glad the weather had turned out fine, and hoped it would continue through the tournament. The Christmas and New Year tournament was the only source of revenue the cen • tre had beyond affiliation fees, the small levy that -was collected from the clubs being just sufficient to pay the levy due to tne Dominion Bowling Association, and the money received from the tourney went to entertain the veterans, on veterans day and on ispecial occasions such as the I'isit of the British bowlers. He concluded by wishing all the bowlers of the Wellington Centre the compliments of th*3 season and that the beet team might win, upon which he declared the tournament open amidst hearty applause. The umpire, Mr S. Potter, then got the rinks on the green and play was soon in full awlnjr. The president and secretary of the Centre visited Thorndon, Kelburn and Victoria greens in the morning, and Uataitai and Newtown in the afternoon, and the Major (Mr C. J. B. Norwood) also did a round of visits, exchanging the compliments of the season at the various clubs. A mnTig the surprise defeats in the morning round' were those of rinks skipped by J. Brackenridge (Newtown), Porteous (Wellington), Dustin (Lyall * Bay), Cooper (Karori), B. J- Hill (Wellington), and Fielding (Hataitai). Some ,of the defeats were substantial ones. GOOD RECOVERIES In the afternoon the second round eaw one or 'two astonishing recoveries on the Wellington green. Captain McArthur (Wellington) whs 10 down on the first five heads against Cathie (Karori) add appeared to be in for a trouncing, but on the sixth head the locals drew one out of the bag, scoring a 7 on the head with magnificent drawing. Thus heartened they actually scored a 6 on 1 the next head, and followed this with three on the eighth, thus taking a substantial lead. In tße next six heads McArthur scored nine to his opponent's three, to win finally by 31—-18, ‘actually scoring 31 points while the opposing side, scored 8. Ryder, of Lyall Bay, added another win in the first afternoon game, ‘but went down, in the third, but was well pleased to win two out of three on the day. J. J. Roberts (Wellington) secured the only triple win on the Wellington green, number one pulled off three victories at Thorndon, where the wind was rather tricky at one end, while at Newtown Raven (Lyall Bay) and Russell (Newtown) both secured a trio of victories. Doherty, of Kelburn, only claimed one win for the day. Pollock (Newtown) brought off the treble event at Kelburn, where the wind had the least effect of any green, while Ramsay, upheld Hataitai's credit with a similar success at Victoria, and Robinson (Victoria) performed a like feat. James (Wellington) and Bolton (Victoria) each did the hat trick on Hataitai green. • Although it was a long day the umpires were, not given a great deal to do. On Wellington green two Wellington rinks drew together in the last round of the day. Captain McArthur and J. J. Roberts, each having two wins to his credit. Roberts lead 10—1 at the sixth head, but it was 13—13 at the 16th, -when Roberts's yink went ahead steadily, scoring five on the 20th head add securing a lead of 10. .The last head was not played. The first rink on Wellington green was not playing too well, and at Newtown and Hataitai the end rinks, were rather tricky, the wind often upsetting the calculations of players, and in these games teams which had been successful on other rinks came to grief here. The headquarters were at Wellington green. The results were promptly telephoned through t/» Mr Shallcrass. and within half an hour of the completion of the day's play me summary of wins and losses had been completed. Oh all the greens the entertainment left nothing to be desired, and the rinks generally were in excellent condition and played splendidly in th* aftornoon. The fourth round of games will commence at 9.15 a.m. to-day.
