COSMOPOLITAN GATHERING ON ELLIS ISLAND » MUSIC AND FEASTING. Australian and N.Z Cablo Association. NEW YORK, December 25. There was a colourful international Christmas celebration when more than 500 immigrants—men, women, and children—gathered for recreation at Ellis Island. They received gifts and listened to music arid songs in many tongues, after which they feasted. The audience included Italians, Africans from the Sahara and the Gold Coast, Slovak peasant women wearing voluminous skirts and red handkerchiefs, 1 Chinese, Irishmen, Jews from Bethlehem, (Spanish senoritas with higV combs in . their hair, and a group of pretty Japanese geisha girls.' The majority w-ere immigrants who had been detained for various, reasons for a week to three months, hut there were also more than 100 deportees, whose faces lightened nn at the songs and saddened again when the music ended. A musical programme for sick immigrants in hospital precede- the main entertainment.
