CARNIVAL TIME

ENDLESS-ATTRACTIONS YOUTH AND BEAUTY AT LYALL BAY RESULT OF BATHING BEAUTY CONTEST The true ’ holiday spirit was well to the fore on Snturday, when, the Lyall Bay Beach Carnival was formally opened by His Worship the Mayor (Mr O. J. B. Norwood). The carnival will extend until next Saturday, January 2nd. The gala is being run by the Lyall Bay and Maranui Surf and, Life. Saving Clubs. Mr P. Coira, chairman of the combined committees, stated that the main object of the carnival was to obtain sufficient funds to help

the City Council to remove the present bathing sheds (which are anything but objects of beauty). He was sure that before long the new promenade,V with the bathing sheds underneath, would be on its way towards construction. Since. the inauguration of these clubs, he said, they Had saved , the council about £20,000 by supplying life-savers, which were absolutely necessary for , the safety of bathers. Mr Coira stated that the Lyall Bay Club was the first of its kind ip tpe Dominion, and that the Maranui Club had been in existence only a few years less. The Mayor heartily congratulated all connected with the carnival.- He was glad to see the civic pride shown by the clubs, and promised them every assistance for the proposed" change. He also praised the excellence of the beach and its bathing facilities, AMUSEMENTS EVERYWHERE There, were stalls everywhere. Aunt Sally> hoop-la, darts, a' miniature .theatre, a jazz wave, a popular merry-go-round, apd a tent wherein was laid down a splendid dancing floor, all com r bined to make up ideal 1 holiday attractions. Of the side-shows, hoop-la was easily the - prime favourite. Some of the prizes were very good. Next in favour was the dance floor. Inside the

1 tent could be seen many people, young and old, dancing their cares away to tho music of a perfect dance orchestra. The merry-go-round was a great success. It was by no means the younger set only who patronised this attraction. The grown-ups forgot for she moment that their youth was passing, and sougEt once more the exciting sensation of the merry-go-round, which was always first favourite in their childhood’s days. Whenever the machine stopped there was a stampede for the outside horses. Of course, there were sweet stalls, and cool drink, and ice-cream stalls everywhere. ; These did a roaring trade. In the morning there was a- children’s fancy dress competition. The winners were: Misses D. "and F. Harris (Dutch couple), 1; Miss Lockhead, 2; Miss S. Jackson and Miss M. Henman, highly commended. MISS “MISS NEW ZEALAND 1” In the afternoon there was the national bathing beauty, competition in order to obtain a representative for “Miss New Zealand,” 1925-26. The contestants were paraded on a plat-

form, and were judged by Dr Wilson Hogg, Messrs J. Ellis, and Nelson Isaac. The .lady supervisor was Mrs 0. Clark. The prizes were as follow: —First prize, £3O; second prize, £10; third prize, £5; and silver, cup to winner (to be held for one year). The silver cup was presented by Messrs Lane, Walker, Rudkin, Ltd., Christchurch, through the instrumentality of Mr W. Hernig, men’s outfitters, of Cuba street. After much consideration the following ladies were selected as being 1 the best:— Mrs Scales (Wellington) 1 Miss G. I. Smith (Petone) 2 Miss H, Edglinton (Featherston) ... 3 From 8 a.m. to .10 p.m. there was jazzing .on the parade, to the musio of the “Ace-High Jazz Band,” the piano for which was .kindly lent by Messrs H. Nimmo and Sons. • There was also an excellent display of electric club-swinging by the Y.M.C.A. gymnasts, under the direction of Captain J. Duffy. The gala will continue throughout next week. < There must have heealwell over two thousand people at the gala on Saturday. afternoon, when the weather was fine, hut a trifle too breezy.
