PAY FOR PRISONERS

CONCESSIONS TO HOSPITAL BOARDS ACTION BY PRISONS DEPARTMENT. In presenting the report of the Social Welfare committee to the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday, Mr J Petherick stated that at the conference of Hospital Boards, resolutions Were passed asking that prison pay should, be made in maintenance cases at an earlier date than three months. While the Prisons Department had not agreed to make the payment earlier it had been decided that the amount of pay should he doubled, which would be an advance on what had been asked for, and wduld be acceptable to Hospital Boards. The impression had been that sentences in such cases were short, but in five cases since April brought by the board the sentences had been two years in two cases. 12 months in two others, and six months in the other.

The Rev. J. Lochore said the committee was extremely lenient in some of the cases. The chairman said the department had also agreed to pay £3 3s per week for prisoners receiving treatment at the hospital. (Hear, hear.)
