SEAMEN STRIKERS
RELEASED FROM GAOL' ~\ MANY REMAIN IN DOMINION.: (By Telegraph—Special to “Times.”) AUCKLAND, December 16 After serving a sentence of two months’ hard labour for combining to disobey lawful commands, 37 mombora of crew of the Athemo were released from Mount Eden Gaol yesterday. There are still 63 strikers in prison, and it will be early in January before they complete their sentence of three months’ hard labour for refusing duty. Some of them are members of the crew of the Otaki and some belong to the Tainui
A nnmner of strikers are being sent to England as distressed British seamen by the lonic, which will leave Wellington for London an Saturday. Although about 200 strikers were left behind at Auckland only 31 have applied to the local superintendent of the Mercantile Marine to be sent to England as distressed British seamen, and most of them are members of the Athenic’s crew. The majority of the other men have found: employment, and have expressed a,desire to remain in Nc-w Zealand.
The local officials of the Seamen's Union have sent a petition to the Prime Minister asking for the release of the strikers still in gaol before their sentences expire, if there is a steamer available for them to be sent to England as distressed British seamen.
