THEFT OF A SHEEP
TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR FAMILY DEFENDERS GIVEN PROBATION. Tor, ' Per Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 16 „r-Jacob Anderson Bak and Arthur Pjercy Oliver Miller, both midjletSged men, who pleaded guilty in the ,lower court at Woodville to a charge of stealing a sheep, appeared for sentence in the Supreme Gourt this morning.
Counsel for the prisoners said both men had borne good characters. The motive of the crime was not pecuniary gain, but to provide food for their wives and families, which they were not otherwise able to obtain. His Honour: “Not nblo to obtain on 17s a day?” Counsel replied that both men were in debt. Both were admitted ta probation for one year, on condition that each paid half the costs of '.lie prosecution, and that Miller took cut a prohibition order.
