STUDENTS SAY FAREWELL PRIZE-GIVING AT .BOYS’ COLLEGE END OF A SHORT YEAR There was just the weather for friendly farewells vesterdav -when'the slopes before Wellington College witnessed the annual prize-giving to students who today will be speeding homeward. The Director of Education (Mr J. R. Caughlpy) presented the prizes, and a dense throng faced him.. After heaping congratulations on the y-unuers' of tile scholarships and prizes, Mr W. H. P. Barber (*;hairman of the Board of Governors) spoke in appreciative terms of the continued interest which the College Old Bbys' Association manifested in the welfare of vh© college. Although 60me money had been expended m improvements, the college buildings were still inadequate for the carrying out of thtf work of the institution. There was always the danger of fire destroying the old wooden structure, and should such a thing occur they would then be ..without a home., He trusted that the Director of Education would see his way to urge on the Minister the necessity of making provision for a permanent college buildingin conjunction with the Memorial Hall. In view of the increased population of the district and the evergrowing attendance of students, additional schoolroom was required. The principal (Mr T. R. Cresswell), in his fifth annual report of the work of the remarked that the commencement Jot the school year was delayed through the serious epidemic of infantile paralysis. The year's work had therefore been compressed into a small compass, and the attempt ’had to be made to put a full year's work into a eborter period. That had resulted in a good deal of strain, both to the student© and to the teaching staff. Mr Cresswell then referred to the successful examination results of last year. The college students had won three university scholarships, and the credit list had been unique in the history of the school. Those results afforded decisive proof that the school was not, turning out just one or two brilliant boys, but that the general woris i i the higher forms was good* The other detailed results were also eminently satisfactory. As to the work of the year just concluded, the reports were not yet available, but ho was in a posi-

tion tg say that the inspectors* had awarded, on 'his recommendation, senior free places to 187 boys—a larger number than la6t year. He was pleased to be able to say th*at in spite of the short year's wprk the college would not suffer seriously, *

Following his presentation of tho prizes, Mr J. Caughley expressed the nope that students would continue at the college as long as possible. Although thoy had good opportunities now, they would find later in life that those opportunities were none too great, for they would have to be prepared for the requirements of the world fifteen or twenty *ears hence He was satisfied that there was no better preparation for University training than to go right through a secondary school like Wellington CoU ***' SCHOLARSHIPS.
