PICK IN A SKULL
AT HOUGHTON BAY '• r
Some City Council workmen are engaged just now in widening the road at Houghton Bay, between Island' Bay and Lyall Bay. Yesterday afternoon, shortly before finishing for the afternoon, a workman drove his pick into the ground, and pulling it away found he had embedded it in a skull. , . Fifteen teeth, of which three are double, fell from the skull, which was detached from the body. The teeth, which are a light brown, are in a good state of preservation, and appear to belong to a woman or young adult. The remainder of the skeleton still remains buried under about , four feet of earth, and efforts will be made to recover it without further fractures.
The road is being cut back about seven feet in order to carry on the uniform width of the marine drive round the bays. About ten men are engaged on the excavation work.
