A NEW CHESS CHAMPION

The international chess tournament produced a most exciting struggle for first place, which resulted in favour of M. Bogoljubov, who secured 15 points out of the possible. 20, defeating E, Lasker and Jose Capablanca (the champion) 13) points each. Torre, a youthful Mexican, was fourth. The feature of the tournament has been the test of the .ultra-modern methods of opening pawn play, of which Bogoljubov is the foremost exponent, hut Lasker put up a fine struggle with the older methods. Capablanca suffered two unexpected defeats early in the tournament, Jjut he finished with a fine series of wins. Torre, of whom Capabalanca said: “In a few years this hoy will surpass ub all,” .defeated Lasker in a most brilliantly contested game.
