WADESTOWN AFFAIRS
PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY MEETS USEFUL ACTIVITIES. The annual meeting of the Wadestown Progressive Society was held in St. Luke’s Hall last evening, the president, Mr E. J. Wiffin presiding. The chairman, in his report, stated that during the year considerable correspondence had been carried on between the secretary of the association and the municipal authorities, besides ' which three deputations' had waited •on the Mayor in connection with footpaths, better access to the higher levels of Wadestown, etc. At oße of the’ deputations, the_ matter of the widening of the main road from the tramway terminus to the school) was stressed. This was a matter of urgency, not only from the point of view of the children attending the school, but from that of the ordinary user of the road. It had come to The ears of the association that the council had in contemplation the provision of a new road from somewhere in the vicinity of St. Luke’s Church to Cecil road. He would urge that the incoming committee rather stress the necessity of attending to the old road from, the tramway terminus, rather than the undertaking of new work. Proceeding, the chairman urged the necessity for co-operation. As long as the main body of the ratepayers were indifferent, the Town Board took no notice of their representations. A matter that would have to be disposed of immediately, was the disposal- of a sum of about £SO collected to aid sufferers during the influenza epidemic. About £IOO had been held, and of this, £SO was voted to the Plunket Home. ,It seemed to him that it would be a good thing to devote this sum to the funds of organisations in the district. ■ He/ would suggest that the £SO be divided, between tlie three churches in the district; it might be held that the purpose for which the money was raised would not permit of this, but it must he remembered that the churches aided largely in the relief of sickness, and as all sections oi the community, of every religious belief,, . had p°n~ tributed to the fund, the money might well be returned in this way. The matter of an early Sunday tram service was stressed, the chairman stating that Wadestown had been promised at 9 a.m. tram from November. This promise had been neglected, and he urged that this matter be
pushed ah ea< l. _ , „ . , Mr C. A. L. Treaawell, in seconding the chairman’s report, added a plea for closer co-operation the residents of the district in working for the benefit of the locality. Continuing, Mr Treadwell drew attention to an area in Sefton street uhich was the only place in the suburb which might be used as a park. Such a place was necessary in the interests of women and children. i Sir Harold Beauchamp had offered to head a fund towards purchasing the area, whicn was slowly being cut up. Ine City Council had now in hand a sum or £150,000 to be used in the interests of tbe city. He urged that application be made to the council for something from this fund towards the purchase of the land. ELECTION OF OFFICERS i Patron, Sir Harold Beauchamp; president, Mr Canvell Cooke; vicepresidents, Messrs G. Nathan, E. J. (Wiffin. F. J. House, W. Ellis. A. Par[lane, G. P. Ball; secretary, Mr M. M.
