LIGHTING BASIN RESERVE

PROBLEMS FOR ATHLETIC CENTRE OFFER MADE TO CITY COUNCIL The lighting installation of the Basin Reserve will cost' .£250, and while the City Council lteserve Committee is anxious to have this work for the benelit of athletics and other sport**, it is not felt desirable to undertake such an expenditure while tha reserves finances are so precarious. This impression was conveyed to a meeting of the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. last evening, when it- was reported that the Centre had made an offer to the council, under which it was stipulated that meetings were to be held every Wednesday evening, \reather permitting . The net "gate' r was to be di-vided-HJO per cent, to the council and 40 per cent, to the Centre. It was estimated that a low "gate" would be £SO, expenses would approximate £25, leaving £ls to the council and £lO to the Centro. The secretary (Mr M. O'Sullivan) said the cost of lighting the Basin lteserve would be £250, but the council was not prepared to spend this sum on' the project at this period of its year. The committee members were in favour of letting the Basin on the Centre's terms. It was suggested that the Centre offer the council 4£50 towards the cost of the lighting installation, but the chairman (Mr A. C. Kitto) pointed out that the Centre’s finance had recently answered a Heavy call towards the visit of the American athletes.

Members did not agree that the Centro nhouUJ grant «£6O towards the cost of the "lighting—it should he a loan—unless the percentages of gate-money be reversed, the Centre to collect 60 per cent., and the council 40 per cent. It was ultimately decided to make this offer to the council, the «£SO in this case to be a straight-out grant to the Council.
