STATE SUBSIDY ADVISED Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, December 7. The losses of the Government merchant fleet in operation in 1925 are estimated at 80,000,000 dollars, the United States Shipping Board reported to Congress on Monday. The hoard urged the Government t 6 aid shipping “either through preferential tariff duties, preferential tonnage dues, or subsidies more or less direct, in order to secure the operation and the continued existence of merchant ships under private ownership.”
