The amount of lire found to exist in a quarter of a square mile of tropical jungle at Kartabo, British Guiana, is almost incredible. In one hour Mr William Beebe, a naturalist, jotted down 216 observations on 536 living animals. In that small rrea Mr Beebe saw -jeventy-three different hinds of mammals. In the whole of New York ttatc—lß,ooo times larger—there are #nly 81! He found also that the various birds were more numerous than in the British Isles—there being 464 distinct species. By digging up a square yard of soil he came across a thousand different forms of insect life.
