OPENS ON SATURDAY

KHANDALLAH’S SWIMMING POOL FREE FOR THE DAY. From Saturday the general public may use the Khandallah swimming pool. The official opening is set for that date, and on Saturday entrance to the pool will be free. Set among the green slopes of the Khandallah Domain, ,the pool holds rich promise to suburban residents for the coming summer. It is a concreted excavation, 113 ft in length and about 40ft wide. Ten feet of it is set aside for a paddling pool for children, and here the depth of the water will be only from 13in to 2ft. In the pool proper, the 103 ft range from a depth of 3ft to round about 7ft 6in. It will be remembered that the original depth was less, but that upon the representations of the local swimmers who desired to hold races in the pool, the council determined to deepen it. This was done by placing a raised rim of concrete at the higher end, and the concreting work has been finished for some time.

The pool is surrounded by a neat 'wire fence, and entrance to the water will be gained at the prices charged for the city baths; that is, one penny for children, and twopence, for adults. There will be concession tickets also. The concreting yesterday presented itself as a solid piece of work. To the north of-the excavation runs the Khandallah stream, and this will be used to fill the pool. The stream is quite a small one but swiftly Tunning, ana will give, an adequate supply. The water will be run into the main swimming pool instead' of the childrens fiaddling pool, as was intended originaly, as in the smaller space the water level will he' maintained lower than in the swimming pool. ‘ There are two shelters for swimmers to undress in—one at the deep end, where the spring-board will be placed, and one for ladies at the far end. This shelter is approached by a small bridge over the Khandallah stream.: A number of things yet have to be done. The pool is to be cleaned out, and a steel chain provided to give swimmers hand hold, will be replaced by a steel rail. Filling will commence on Thursday, and the pool should be ready for Saturday morning.
