ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION

INVITATION TO SIR ERNEST RUTHERFORD.

It was decided at the monthly meeting of the English-speaking Union executive to invite Sir Ernest Rutherford to be present at an entertainment given in his honour during his visit to Wellington. The hon. secretary, Mr O. E. Webb, was asked to write to Sir Ernest and make inquiries as to the most suitable time for the entertainment, which will be arranged according to his engagements. Mesdames M Holmes, J. S. Elliot, and J. O’Shea were appointed as a sub-committee to carry out arrangements when Air Webb receives a reply. Correspondence from England, America, and Australia was rend, and the receipt from the Melbourne branch of ii number of programmes in connection with the recent visit of the American fleet occasioned much interest. Mr Webb stated that he had forwarded photographs and all information about the entertainments given by the union in Wellington to headquarters, to America, and to Australia. Mr Webb also reported thnt lie had cabled to Lord Forster inquiring if the union could entertain him and Ladv Forster when tliev visited New Zealand, and had received a courteous reply, regretting that the visit would not take place at present. Mr A. Leigh Hunt presided in the absence of the chairman, Air Harold Johnston. Several new members were elected, and a number of others proposed. '
