The vessel was towed by motor boats from the Rcdeliffs estuary last week-end and taken around to Lyttelton. At Lyttelton she will be placed on the slip for inspection and repairs, prior to being towed to Nelson, where she will
spend the remainder of her days as a coal hulk for the storage of the Anchor Company’s bunker coal. The Sea Scout is n wooden vessel of 128 tons, and was built on the Hnon river in 1876. For ninny years she plied between Australian .ports and New ZcnInnd. She traded on the New Zealand const for a long time, and was known as a smart little sailer. During the war, after being idle for some years, she was bought and loaded for San Francisco. Before loading was completed she commenced to leak badly and the project was abandoned. She was again idle for some years, and was then acquired by the Scout authorities. The voyage from Lyttelton to Sumner was made in tow of the tug Lyttelton, and the trip across the bar was made without incident. At the Shag Rock corner, however, the vessel grounded, but after two hours' strenuous work on the part of those on board she was refloated and safely moored in the estuary.

The Central Marine Engine Works of the builders will supply the propelling machinery, consisting of balanced quadruple engines, having four cylinders 28, 41, 58&, and 85, by* 54in stroke. There will be fitted five large multitubular boilers arranged to work at a steam pressure of 2251 b per square inch. OIL-BURNING TUG FOR BLUFF. The Bluff Harbour Board decided at a meeting held on Monday to purchase the combined tug and passenger steamer offered by Messrs Vickers, Ltd., of Dublin, for the Bluff Harbour towing and pilot work, and the Stewart Island service. It is considered by the board and those who have had an opportunity of perusing the specifications of the new vessel, that her arrival will solve the problems that face would-be visitors to Stewart Island. The price of the new tug was quoted at .£29,410, but certain improvements are to be carried out, bringing the final cost to about £31,000. The boat was selected from 19 tenders, the prices ranging from £24,380 to £33,000. FAMOUS OLD SHIPS. A series of articles is now running in "Beardmore News," the oTgan of William Beardmore and Co., Ltd., shipbuilders and engineers, of Glasgow, dealing with famous ships engined by the firm and its predecessors in the last century. Among these was the Cunard Niagara, one of the famous quartet built in 1847 for the new American mail contract, which necessitated a weekly sailing in either direction. In view of the international position at the time, she was built to carry guns of the biggest calibre then in use in the navy, and was also adaptable as a transport, for which she was used later in the Crimean Wa £ Another vessel mentioned is the floating
battery Erebus, a forerunner of the modern monitor. She was, in reality, the first ironclad in the world, being armoured with 4£in forged iron plates, backed with 6in teak; and she carried 30 64-pounder guns. Her armour was proved to be amply sufficient to ward off the heaviest metal of the day. One of these monitors is still in existence as a landing stage at Chatham. It was the predecessors of the Beardmore shipbuilding business who built one of the first two ironclad battleships, the Black Prince, in 1861, a vessel which remained in commission (latterly as a boys' training ship) actually until 1922, while her hull was still in magnificent condition, and was reported as fit to be towed anywhere. |jt is unusual in these days to hear of a steamship being converted to sails or a motor ship to steam. But 20 or 30 years ago such a procedure was not uncommon, since the rate of progress in steam engineering made obsolete many steamers that were quite sound in the hull, while there was still a good ; demand for sailing ships. The Pereire. the first screw steamship in the French merchant marine, was converted to a sailiug ship in the late 80’s, although her , original engines had given her a service speed of 13 knots when she was built in the Clyde in 1860. As a sailing ship she had several fine .passages to her credit, the fastest being from Landfall in Newfoundland to Landfall in Scotland in six dnvs 18 hours. She has only just been broken up.
