CHANGE-OVER TO-MORROW

WILL BE ALL OVER IN TEN MINUTES.

The change-over to automatic telephones in Wellington, bringing to completion the automatio telephone service in the citv and suburbs, takes pla:e at midnight to-morrow (Saturday). It is not just a question of pushing over a lover, hut it will only occupy ihe mechanics about ten minutes toveffect the technical alteration which will place the old subscribers on the new system. It is for this reason that the bewitching hour has been chosen for the occasion, when 'most people will be —or should he—in bed. and little use is likely to be. made of the telephone at such an hour. When the publio wake up on Sunday morning they will use the new instruments instead of the old ones. Quite possibly some will be ringing up their friends out of curiosity and to try the new instrument, hut even for this reason little trouble is experienced, as there r.re very few who have not had some experience of the automatio telephone. Business men may have an old instrument at home and an automatio m the office, or vice-versa, so that it ie no novelty to them. Further, the automat'd has already been in existence in several of the suburbs for a considerable time.

People have had experience of ohange-overs in Wellington When the automatio exchanges were installed at Courtenay place, Newtown, Khandallah and Kelburn, and very little trouble was experienced on any of these occasions. Courtenay place was tjje first to be completed, and tho3e who were in the change-over were naturally anxious to try it out. Consequently, a big load was put upon it for the first day or two, hut it stood up to :t well, nnd there was practically no hitch. These affected by the change-over to-morrow are mostly in the city area. If by chance any of the new instruments should not work properly, the subscriber should ring “complaints,” and it will ho attended to.
