OJCURI POINT LIGHT OUT. The Marino Department has been advised by the captain of the Nikau that Okuvi. Point light is out. The Tutanekai, which is at present in the Sounds, has been ordered to repair the light, and it is expected that the light will be in working order again within the next .two or three days. WAIKAWA DUE TO-DAY. From Singapore, via Bunbury, Hobart, Dunedin and Lyttelton, the Union Company’s steamer Waikawa is due here today and sails to-morrow for Auckland, where she complete© her discharge. SUSSEX CLEARS TIMARU. The Union Company advise that tho Federal steamer Sussex left Timaru last evening for Dunedin, thence Bluff, to complete her discharge of Eastern cargo. She clears Bluff again early next week for Newcastle to load for Java, on route, to Calcutta, where she loads for Now Zealand again.

ATHENIC FROM SOUTHAMPTON. Over 600 passengers, including a largo batch of assisted immigrants, arrived at Auckland from England by tho White Star liner Athenic. The vessel loaded her present general cargo at London and proceeded to Southampton to embark her passengers. She sailed thence on August 14th and passed through the Panama Canal on August 30th. Towards tlic conclusion of her voyage the liner encountered heavy westerly weather, which considerably delayed her arrival nt Auckland. She reached, port shortly before 10 o’clock on Tuesday morning and anchored in the stream for inspection by the port doctor and the Customs officials. The inspection occupied nearly three hours and th© Athenic then berthed at tho eastern side of the Queen’s wharf. From Auckland she is to proceed to Wellington to complete discharge and to commence loading for her return' trip, on which she is scheduled to sail on October 21st.

WEST NILUS FROM PACIFIC COAST.

An uneventful voyage across the pacific was experienced by the steamer West Nilus, a unit of the Swayne and Jloyt Line's fleet, which arrived at Auckland from Sun Francisco on Wednesday morning. For her recent trip the West Nilus loaded her cargo at Aberdeen, Bellingham. Seattle, Vancouver, and Sjm Francisco. She cleared the last niftnefl port on August 26tli, and experienced line weather with light winds until Saturday last, when moderate westerly weather was encountered. The conditions continued boisterous on Sunday, and on Monday a moderate westerly gale with high seas was encountered. Tho weather yesterday showed little improvement, and the freighter was delayed in her arrival at this port by about fifteen hours. On 1 arrival at 7 o’clock on Wednesday morning the West Nilus anchored in tho stream for medical inspection and berthed about two hours later at the eastern side of tho Prince’s wharf to unload 1,036,000 ft of timber, 1200 tons of general cargo, and 19,000 cases of gasoline before proceeding, about Thursday of next week, to southern and Australian ports to complete discharge. The rates of exchange on the cargo for Customs purposes .are : Canada, 4.86 dollars; U.S.A., 4.86 dollars to the X sterling. The West Nilus is under the command of Captain P. LOSS OF THE KARAMU ERROR OF JUDGMENT FOUND. By Telegraph —Pres* Assn.—Cony right. SYDNEY, September 23. The Marine Court, inquiring into the loss of the Karumu, after expressing admiration at the conduct of the captain, officers, and crew, found that the loss of the vessel was due to damage sustained in striking rocks at the Entrance Island. The ship was navigated with proper scamaniike care, except that the master. Captain Huntly, committed an error of judgment by negotiating the passage of Macquarie Harbour against a 6trong flood tide. The loss of the ship was not caused by a failure of duty of any person, but Captain Huntly and his chief .engineer, Mr Bennie, would have shown better judgment had they taken more time in Pilot Bay to ascertain the extent of the leakage before continuing the voyage.

Since her launch a new vessel named the Asturias (22.000 gross tons) Inis been built at the Belfast yards, and is said to mark an epoch in the progress of naval aveiiitectur-j. With the novel features in her design and the fact that she is the largest motor ship in the world, the Asturias will be tho pioneer of a new class of vessel which, it is confidently expected, will maintain the supremacy of British shipbuilding; thanks to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. The four-cycle double-acting marine Diesel engines of th© Asturias are the largest marine Diesel engines ever constructed, and the 20,0C.0 h.p. developewd will be delivered on two ohnfts—an outstanding feature of her propelling system. Hence, Hie adoption of internal combustion ' engines for large power has not necessitated any departure from the normal twin screw arrangement. The Asturias is designed to carry 1740 passengers and crew. ftlic is intended for the South American trade, and has for her principal' dimensions: Length, 055 ft Bin; breadth. 78ft; depth, 45ft. In the first-class accommodation the forward staircase extends through six docks, and from the orlop deck to the toj> of the skylight is about 60ft. A swimming bath, an inquiry bureau, and a shop are a few of the special additions for the use, comfort or convenience of passengers. The dining-room is a magnificent apartment in the style of the French empire, with columns of Breclio Violetto marble and bronze gilt carvings and embellishments. The social hall is an equally noble apartment of Georgian character; a flood of light is afforded by lofty Venetian windows reminiscent of those at Ely House, Dover street; the lounge is based on the State apartments at Houghton House, Norfolk, in Kent’s middle period; the smoke room, in the William and Mary period, is panelled throughout in cedar wood alter tbo rooms at Belton House, Lincolnshire, one of the finest examples of the period in England, where Grinling Gibbous did some of hift besi work; tho winter garden is gay with the colour of sunny Spain in the days of the Moors, and the walls have alternate horizontal bands of red and white in stone finish in the Spanish moresnue style of Cor- : dova;.nnd the swimming both is in the Pompeian slyl®.
