OVERRUN WITH RATS
NEED OF A “PIED PIPER" Residents in Cecil street, a workingclass district in West thill, have been suffering from a plague of ferocious rats, which swarm like rabbits in the open spaces'at the back of houses, and are bold enough to disport themselves in broad daylight. Cats have been so severely bitten in encounters with these rats that they now wisely refrain from open warfare, and dogs are said to be just as powerless against the invaders. Many people have been taking the precaution of carrying clubs and sweeping blushes upstairs at bedtime to use in case of attack. It is reported that one woman, having made a beefsteak pie for her husband’s dinner, went out to buy some bread, and when she came back found ten rats on the table and the pie nearly all eaten.
The homes in this infested district are well kept and spick and span, and the women are greatly concerned at the presence of these vermin, and it k probable that local sanitary authorities will take action against premises that are suspected of breeding the rats.
