IMPROVED DIRECTION FINDER. An improvement in ships' directionfinding equipment, resulting in greater convenience and economy in installation, has now been made*by the Marconi International Marine Communication Company, Ltd. It consists in the replacement of the large double-loop aerial system, which has become so familiar, by two fixed frame aerials, which are mounted in a rigid wooden framework, measuring Bft in height by 4ft square. The two frames are fixed permanently at right angles to each other, one being parallel to the fore and aft line of the ship, and the other athwart-ships. The .aerials are formed by a number of turns of stranded wire, the ends of the loops being taken through suitably insulated connections to tho direction-finding instrument.

It is interesting to note that this new development obviates the use of expensive fittings in the way of posts or stays to support the aerials, and nt the some time allows great latitude in the position of the direetion-findinjf itself It is not necessary to install the instrument immediately unfler, or even adjacent to, the aerial system, and tho installation can therefore be arranged according to the requirements of the ship. Extensive tests have been made with the new installation, and many excellent reports have been received from ships which are already equipped. The two recent additions to the Cunard fleet, Alaunia and Catinthin, have both been equipped with this new directionfinding installation, and these fittings bring the total of Cunard ships carrying Marconi direction-finding apparatus to 15 . Among other ships which have been or are oeing equipped with this new development of the Marconi direc-tion-finders are the Donaldson liner Salacia, steamships Marconi, Hetton, China, Humber Arm, Athelchief, Corner Brook, the T. and J. Harrison liner Ingoma, the Ellerman City liner City of Nagpur, and the P. and O. liner Ballarat. R.MJ3, NIAGARA. The Union Company advise that the H.M.S. Niagara leaves Sydney at noon to-morrow for Auckland, where she w due on Monday next. She is expected to clear Auckland about Saturday for Gisborne, thence Napier and Wellington to complete loading, and is scheduled to sail finally from Wellington on October 10th for Southampton and London, via Panama und Curacao-

At the instance of the Merchant Shipping Advisory Committee, which contains representatives of all the interests connected with shipping, the Board of Trade have decided that a lifeboat fitted with liand-propelling gear may be accepted in lieu of a motor lifeboat on vessels carrying more than 15 lifeboats. MAORI DELAYED. The Union Company's ferry steamer Maori arrived at Wellington at 8.15 o'clock yesterday morning from Lyttelton, a little over an hour late. The vessel was delayed owing to a minor mishap to her bow rudder. Thi* Maori waa 6$ miles out of Lyttelton when the rudder began to bump, and the ship was stopped for some time. She reached port without any difficulty, however, and a diver was sent down to effect repairs. SHIPPING OUTLOOK. Interviewed in Glasgow recently by “Lloyd's," Mr Robert Dollar, the wellknown San Francisco shipowner, said he thought tho shipping trade had now touched rock bottom. Ho did not think there would be an earlv revival, but ho believed that things could not get worse, and that there must be a change for the better in the comparatively near future. He had noticed in the course of hie long experience that there was always a dull spell in May, June, July end August. The world's crops of tho previous year had all beei moved, and those of the current year had not come forward. In September, October, November and December there was always an improved demand for tonnage for the purpose of moving the now crops. So he had hopes of on improvement in trade, however slight, in Hie course of the next month or two. Continuing, Mr Dollar said he had so much confidence in the future of shipping that he hod purchased five of the American Government's “President" class of passenger and cargo steamers, in addition to seven others eighteen months ago. A shipowner was always safe in Buying when ho felt sure that rock bottom had been reached, and he personally felt sure of that now. It was, he thought, a matter for congratulation that such a largo proportion of the American Government fleet had been sold to Mr Ford for scrap .Still more would have to be dealt with in a similar way, so that a great maos of shipping that would never he used, that encumbered the registers of the respective countries and acted as a dampener on trads, might be cleared out of the way. Mr Dollar, who is on his fourth tour round the world, left San Francisco on May 16th, and will sail from Marseilles by tho steamer President Garfield on an early date. to prevent~dissipation. To prevent the dissipation of‘the sums received as insurance compensation for vessels lost during the war, regulations were made in Norway under which such sums were to be expended- on the acquisition of new tonnage within a certain period, otherwise they would be subject to special taxation; - From time to time since the original law was passed in June, 1918, this period has been extended, and the Norwegian Shipowners' Association has recently made representations to the Department of Finance suggesting that the existing regulations should either bb*withdrawn altogether or the - period extended for a further five , years from December 31st, 3926, the date by which—according to the present law—all such sums have to be spent. The Association points out that it has been officially informed that on May 32th last the sums not yet used totalled-about 109 million kroner, and it considers that with the present financial position and monetary conditions in Norway, it would be inadvisable to spend such h. large amount in the next eighteen months.
