BIRTHS AND DEATHS
DECREASE IN AUGUST TOLL OF THREE DISEASES. -. The total births registered for the urban areas of the Dominion in August amounted to 987, as against 1056 in July—a decrease of 69. The deaths in August were 579, a decrease of 24 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 316, females 263. Seventy-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 12.78 per cent, of the whole number. Fifty-four of these were under one yeaT of age. The birthrate for August was 17.64 per 1000, against 18.89 for the eight months of the year, .and 19.21 for the eight months of 1924. The death rate was 10.35 per 1000, against 7.69 for the eight months of the year and 8.60 for the corresponding eight months last year. The infantile mortality rate was 5.47, against 4.67 per 100, practically corresponding with the figures of a year ago. There was exceptionally high infant mortality at Invercargill in August, the rate being 12.82 per 100. while at Auckland it was 6.35, Wellington 3.95. Christchurch 6.83, Dunedin 7.14. There were 40 deaths from various forms of tuberculosis, 67_ from canoer, and 29 were due to suicides and accidents.
Tuberculosis,- canoer and diabetes accounted for 114 deaths.
