ISLAND BAY

DISTRICT’S REQUIREMENTS POST OFFICE AND SAYINGS BANK. "That this executive regards the refusal of the Postal Department to. provide proper conveniences, and a suitable post office as most unsatisfactory. The rapid growth, of the district renders further accommodation and a complete postal -and savings bank service absolutely necessary, and nothing less will be accepted as satisfactory." The above is the text of a resolution passed at the September meeting of the executive of the Island Bay Municipal Electors* Association. Much dissatisfaction has from time to time been expressed by the residents regarding the lack of post office, banking and money-order accommodation. Last year the department turned down a petition for u new office and the consequent resident officer. The association renewed the application last month on the score of inadequate accommodation, and the objectionnl feature of people—and especially business people—having to transact confidential details over a trade counter, and nmre particularly when the premises provide no check on the "inquisitive glance" either when dealing with the officer at the counter or in preparation of deposit, withdrawal, or money-order forms.

With a population of between four and five thousand people, who occupy a thousand or more buildings, fifty of which are shops, it is felt that to merely remove 1o the premises of a tradesman whose building will provide sufficient accommodation will not Teraove the objection ’to doing confidential business with anyone closely connected with trade in the district. It is held that comparisons made with other suburbs in the matter of post offices show that Island Bay's request is a reasonable one, though twice refused within a year. It is also felt that the district should not be deprived of telegraphic communication from midday on Saturday until Monday morning.

It is the residents' intention to again press for reedgnition of the needs of the bay by the Postal Department, and to place on reqprd the earnest efforts made m this connection bythe member for the district, Mr R. A. Wright.
