The strike of mill hands at Bombay is spreading, and 21 mills are closed. 'Hie strikers are resorting to foroe. According to a statement issued uy the New South Wales Labour Department, the number of unemployed at the end of August in the metropolitan area was 6500, and in country districts 2000. These figures are exclusive of those affected by the shipping strike. The south dyke of the Yellow river in the Shantung province Has broken at Yung-Ohenh-Sein, and has flooded an area 13 miles wide and 65 miles long. The river has changed its course and 900 villages are surrounded by water, and all the crops ate destroyed. Two men were seriously injured in a running fight between Communists and Fascists at the conclusion of a meeting of unemployed in Jxmdon. The singing of “The Red Flag” was wlsully drowned by the Fascists singing an anthem.. Iron oars and knives were used. In the Supreme Courfr case, in which Sir Thomas Henley, member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, claimed £SOOO damages from the ‘‘Labour Daily” newspaper for alleged libel, the judge upheld an objection by plaintiff’s counsel that a member of Parliament could not be examined m a court of law on any of his statements in Parliament. The plaintiff was awarded £750 damages. Miss Imrie, a New Zealander, proprietress of a well-known Australian and New Zealand resort, the Black Swan restaurant, in the West Australian Agency building, has been fined £BO, the maximum penalty, for not stamping waitresses’ insurance cards. Tbo ‘Daily Express” protests against the excessive punishment, describing the fine as crippling. It points out that Miss Imrie is working to popularise Empire products. More pirates raided the town of Dumaran, Philippine Islands, and murdered a Chinese storekeeper, his wife, and three sons. Three Filipinos were slain.
