LAWN TENNIS

MASTERTON CLUB’S ANNUAL REPORT. Following are sentences from the an* nual report of the Masterton Lawn, Tennis Club, to be presented to tho annual meeting to be held next Thursday : The club membership now stands at 230, 23 active members having joined during the season under review. The club’s annual tournament was again a great success, competing players being most representative of the Dominion’s best. Unfortunately, the weather conditions militated against a successful conclusion of the principal championship events, with the result that some of the finals had to be completed in other centres. As in the past the club is greatly indebted to the ladies for their untiring efforts in attending to the catering, etc., which contributes so much to the sociability of the event. The following are the results of the season’s club championships :—Men’s singles, “Gawifch Cup,” B. P. Welch; men’s doubles, E. M. Hodder and N. H. James; combined doubles, B. P. Welch and Miss K. Bradley; ladies* singles, Miss G. Napier; ladies* double*, Mrs J. Kerslake and Miss O. Lenz. During the recess tins club convened a conference of all affiliated clubs from Martinboroiigh to Pahiatua for tho purpose of discussing the formation of a Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association. The conference held was fully representative of the district; the association was duly formed, and has been accepted by the New Zealand Lnwn Tennis Association. Amongst tbe officers elected were Messrs S. R. Gawith, as president, and H. M. Boddington, as lion, secretary and treasurer. The formation of the Wairarapa Association necessitated this elnh’s withdrawal from the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association, after an affiliation dating hack to the inception of the Wellington Association, during which period most happv relations have existed. As a club that has passed through the “mill” of leaking four lots of courts, we wish the Wellington Asosociation every success in their Miramar venture. Tho committee desire to place on record its deep appreciation of the many vears’ service rendered hy M> Maurice V. as one of its delegates on ino ’Wellington Association. The committee record with regret the death of Miss Tsln Fdintt. The committee trusts the forthcoming season "‘ill offer hotter weather condition**, and eo enable members to have fidl swny and thoroughly enjov themselves.
