In the. semi-finals of the United States lawn tennis championship singles, W. M. Johnston beat R. N. Williams, 7 —5, 6 —3, 6—2. W.T. Tilden beat Vincent Richards, 6— S. o—4, 6—4, o—l. Tilden 19 favourite for the final. (Received September 20, 11.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. September 19. Tilden to-day won tne national tennis singles for the sixth time, beating Johnston, 4—6, 11—9, 6—3, 4—6, 6—3, in a sensational battle lasting nearly three hours. The main features were the base-line driving and the extended rallies. Tildeirs backhand and Johnston's forehand shots were brilliant. Johnston was one point from victory three times in the second set. In the third set Tilden was superior, Johnston showing signs of tiredness, but he improved in tho fourth. Tilden was the fresher man throughout the closing stages, and he took control early in the last set. It was a brilliant display, and Wgß witnessed by a record crowd of 12.000 people.
