“CAPPY RICKS"

GRAND OPERA. HOUSE WEDNESDAY, A Brisbane oritio comments as follows on the performance of the comedy “Cappy Ricks” in that city“To a packed audience at His 1 .Majesty's Theatre last night the cleyer comedy ‘Cappy Ricks’ was presented. ... -Most people have read and enjoyed the novel, ‘Cappy Ricks’ by Peter B. Kyne, but ‘Cappy Ricks,’ dramatised by E. M. Rose and made to live by Ward Lyons’s portrayal, is loved. Cappy iB a clever, fussy, and particularly keen old man of business, and a shipping magnate. Has an horror of incompetence, is straight as a die, and blunt, but under the gruff exterior is gentle, lovable, and full to the brim with humour, which created side-splitting laughter from beginning to end. Many went home with aching sides and merry smiles at the brilliant and brainy wit of Cappy, which is sharpened to at all times outwit Matt Peasley, his young rival, who sustained his part well and convincingly. Agnes Barclay, Gappy’s daughter, is the demure and dainty maiden loved by Matt. Almost too fascinating was Ellen Murray, Cappy’s secretary. The whole of the cast most ably assisted the principals, but it'was Ward Lyons who was the cyclonic force that electrified his audience with his wonderful business ability that allowed not one dull moment that rooked the ' crowd into laughter and tumultuous applause, and made time fly on golden wings. We hand Mr Ward Lyons the crown for merriment-making. In fact the actor was a better Cappy Ricks _ than the creation of the author. ' He is ‘it.’ May he live long to make people happy. Wellington theatre-goers' will have an opportunity of seeing this diverting comedy at the Grand Opera House next Wednesday. The box plan opens at the Bristol next Monday at 9 a.m.
