GOSSIP OF THE TURF
Talk from Track and Stable
(By
"CARBINE")
| NOTES AND COMMENTS | The Otaki meeting will be held to- ■ day and on Monday. The track will I be heavy. ; The hold engaged in the hurdles io- ' day is weak, and Red Head, Bestir, and Waimatao will he among the host. Lady Gay might be one to defeat the favourites. . The Katihiku Hack Handicap might not be as easy to win as backers of Bonhomme and Black Rock will think, but for all that few will care to bet against the two top weights. Megan ran well enough at Dannevirke to suggest that she will be hard to dispose of to-day. Chief opposition might como from Imperial Spark and .Yukumai. Though he has pace Padonna ■ does not stay well, and he might find First Acre and Miss Hupana hard to keep 1 off over the last furlong. [ Recent form points to Mireusonta and Rose of Athens doing well in the Waitawa Handicap. Kilia and Killoch will carry ample confidence in the Taumaka Welter'. The open welter field includes Degage, Aeriform, and Lipsol. Among those engaged in the Maiden are Hymestrason, Sole Mio, and Sasham. The schooling hurdles at Riccarton have been straightened up and bigger wings installed, making the circuit almost as difficult to encompass as would be the case in an actual race. The higher fences seemed to trouble His Majesty (F. Lloyd) when jumping in a round with Ethiopian (A. J: Peart), the Kilbroney gelding being slower than his companion, though jumping safely. Ethiopian fenced well. Lisogne (F. Lloyd) showed the way to Enare (A. J. Peart) over two hurdles on Thursday morning. The former did well, and Enare, though running about a little, showed some aptitude for the business. Bonomel (W. Scabie) is not a good jumper in private, and did not show to advantage when jumping two hurdles with Master Hand (G. Salt). The latter gave a good display, and seems likely to return to form early in the spring. Hiero was out doing useful exercise on the sand on Thursday. The Hierarch
gelding is a fair age now, and the outlook for him i 3 not bright. Pilliewinkie carried 9.8 in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick when he dead-heated for third last Saturday. The winner, Windbag, carried 9.7, and Valamita who finished second had 9. Some of Australia’s best sprinters started in the Tramway Handicap at the Sydney Tattersall’s meeting last Saturday, but contrary to the usual run of weights allotted New Zealand horses, the Derby candidate Diogenes was only asked to carry 6.12 in the Tramway Handicap, seven furlongs. Weight-forage under the Australian code for that distance in September is 7.12. Leading lady, by Royal Artillery— Sopra, has foaled a brown filly to Archery, and Formless, by Multiform— Dreamer, has foaled a chestnut filly to the same sire._ The mares are at presmit on a visit to the imported horse Chief Ruler at Westmere, Wanganui. Subterfuge is with them at the northern stud, and is duetto foal to Archery, and will then visit Chief Ruler. t The Clarenceux filly Jarretiere, in H. Nurse’s ; stable, is thriving on the work she is doing, and should win a T ? ce . or kw° at the spring meetings. She is from Madama, the dam of Battle Knight, and like her half-brother may take a little time before really being seen at her best.
Carbine’s grandson,. Spion Kop, is starting to n\ako a name as a sire in England. His daughter, Sweet Cicely, who is out of Sweet Acre, won the Lancashire Breeders’ Produce Stakes of £2985, at Ain tree (Liverpool), on July 23rd. She is owned by Lieut.Oolonel G. Loder, and heat six others. Solario, who won the St. Leger at Doncaster last week, has a halfbrother named Shlemiel in Victoria. Shlemiel, who is a gelding, has won some small races in the southern State. He is eight years old to Australian time; and is by Senseless, a son of Grey Leg from Senses. If Shlemiel were a stallion it is probable his owner woujd now be able to sell him at a fair price, because of his relationship to Solario. Among the Melbourne two-year-olds, who are now making headway in their racing education, is one of special interest, inasmuch as he is likely to go to Sydney for the Breeders’, Plate. This is Valaisian, a colt bv Valais from Burletta, who cost 3000gns as a yearling. He is described as a handsome, well set up, rich bay, and is reported to be moving along nicely at Caulfield. Valaisian is a half-bro-ther to Radnor, and F. Foulsham has charge of. him. , Mr Percy Miller will be interested in two of three young horses which G. t)elaney is training at Caulfield for a new patron of the turf, Mr John McCaughey (says “Poseidon”). The trio comprises the chestnut colt Koorathella (Sarchedon —Sweet Malt), chestnut filly Beatrice Ann (Sarchedon — Miss Eudorus), and the brown filly Minjecrookah (Lomond—Ursula). They are said to be particularly goodlooking youngsters. Two of the juveniles in the care of H. McCalman recently shaped well in a three-furlong sprint with the colours up. One of the pair is Mist Maid, full sister to that good mare Maid of the Mist, and the other is Bendigoni’an, brother to Col-
ens. The latter belongs to Hr J. H. Lienhop, vice-president of the Bendigo Jockey Club, who comes as far as Randwick to see racing on occasions. About five years ego there were men who wanted to pay big money for the Prudent King horse Easter Week, but recently (says “Poseidon”) Mr Ken Austin had to accept one guinea bids when selling the same horse, J. Donohoe had high hopes of winning a big race with Easter Week, but he did not come on as expected, and into the bargain would not do his best in his races. Slany a time his party threw in for big wins over him, and a costly proposition he proved. One time a race at Randwick was picked to plunge on him, but, unfortunately the Godby crowd had selected the same race to back Purser for thousands, and Easter Week had to be content with second plaoe. Since then 1 > has slipped down the ladder, and was a rank failure even at hurdling. So the horse who was once thought a champion was sold a few days ago foi llgns. The racing recently at Flemington threw some light on the spring events (remarks an Australian writer). The most notable success was that of the Caulfield Cup favourite, Verbius, which won the welter in great style. He is an English-bred horse, by Swynford, and is owned by Hr Sol Green. He is in the Caulfield Cup with the handy weight of 7.11, a nice impost for a four-year-old. Pengarie, who is on the improve, won again with 7.3. He may continue to develop _ and become a dangerous candidate in the Melbourne Cup with 6.7. He is by Pendil, who was a good sticker. Frances Tressady was second with 9.9, and this mare may turn up m one of. the big events, as she stays well. Textile, which has been backed for the Caulfield Cup was favourite for the race won by Pengari, but failed to see out the mile and a quarter, and the form hardly suggests that he is class enough for a cup unless he makes marked improvement. Brown Rajah, from which good things were expected this spring, failed once more. The three-vear-old race went to Ambassador, but as he is by St. Anton the Derby distance may trouble him. Phocion was favourite after his Win the previous Saturday, hut he could do no better than third. An interesting runner was Manfred, but as he started at 20 to 1, he was not regarded as ready. He was in the front line to the turn. With another outing or two he promises to he in fine order for the A.J.C. Derby. AVONDALEPROSPECTS
ELLERSLIE OBSERVATIONS (“Times” Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, September 18. Chamour has a cold, and is not likely to run at Avondale, which is bad luck for J. Thorpe. Ballymoy 11. consistently knocks seconds off the next best, S'lio .will be ridden by J. Mephan. Royal Tea and Clarus are doing best of the local two-year-olds. Arch Arrow, who was progressing, was stopped for a week on account of a cold. He wilt be hardly ready for Avondale.- _ * Barometer, who has been in the country during the winter, has done his work qp the bit. With a race I would be enamoured of Barometer’s chance in the Avondale Cup. He is very bright and muscular, and although restricted to moderate tasks does everything well. • Musketoon has done nothing out of the way, but if the tracks are available next week he may do something to bring him into favour for the Avondale Cup. Erne has not gone fast, hut with his trainer up one day during the week he did vary well over «ix furlongs. He has "tons” of speed. Erne trickled from the nose during the week. There is nothing faster at Ellerslie. Ballymoy 11. is doing great work at Ellerslie. She is likely to attempt the Flying at Avondale, and will he hard to defeat.
Lomint is doing everything as well as could he desired. She may he hard to bowl over in the Guineas. I know nothing of Ripon Abbey, but expect him to turn out a good horse. NOTES FROM IVANGANUI COMING EVENTS WANGANUI, September 18. Anklet has been taken to Avondale to contest the Guineas. -The race here evidently did her good, and she should run well forward in the classic event next week. The Wanganui Jockey Club paid away over £5076 in taxation over its recent meeting. F. Tilley will have Bonhomme, Kilia, Para, dnd Padonna at Otaki on Saturday. Bonhomme appears to have been sharpened up by his racing here, and it is fully expected he will run prominently in his engagements. Padonna goes well at Otaki, and may pick up a race. Iloromea, winner of a division of the Trial Stakes at Dannevirke, is a nice cut of a four-year-old mare which should not be long in placing another race or two to her credit. She had only been in about nine weeks.
There will be racing at Waverley on October 24th and 26th. The EgmontWanganui Hunt Club’s annual meeting takes place on the Saturday; and on the Monday, which will ho Labour Day, the Waverley Racing Club’s meeting will be held. Alaric left here to-day for Auckland to fulfil his engagements at the Avondale meeting. He is in Buch great fettle that he can be depended upon to run a big race in the Cup, though the distance on the second day might be more to his liking. Attractive is being given a spell, which is to last about a month. He will then bo put into work in view of the Feilding meeting. R. O’Donnell has returned to Trentham with his team. On track form here, Bonny Dawn (ought to run well at Otaki to-morrow. Mr F. Wilson, who donated a cup of
a value of £IOO to the owner of the winner of the Waverley Cup last year, is giving a cup valued at £SO to the owner of the winner of the Wilson Welter at the forthcoming meeting. It is understood that a big offer was received and turned down for Bisox, the three-year-old filly by Bisogne, and winner of the' Railway Hack last Saturday. This filly is a good one, and she should he heard of in moiv important races later. The' tracks have not be4n very busy . this week, most of the horses being on ■ the easy list after last week’s racing. W. Rayner did not go north with Anklet, hut remained here to supervise the work of the other members of his team. Bysander is being given some sprinting, and is going on the right way, hut he is still on the big side, and it is doubtful whether he will he properly wound up for the Wellington meeting, as his preparation was interfered with by a cold.
