WHAT IS AN AMATEUR?
QUESTION RAISED IN SOCCER GREAT UPHEAVAL LIKELY. (Sydne. "San" Cable.) LONDON, September 17. The “Westminster Gazette,” pointing out that the Football Association will now confiict with Australia as well as with European countries regarding amateurism, is of the opinion that Australia will join the Continent in taking a bold line, believing that payment js a matter of self-determination. There will most likely he a great upheaval in the Association football world, and it is by no means certain that the English Association will bo victorious. A conference of the United Kingdom Football Associations at Liverpool considered the practice of the Australian Association in allowing players who receive payment in respect of lost wages, broken time, etc., to retain their amateur status. It was decided to ask the Football Association, to which the Australian Association is directly affiliated, to call tho latter’s attention to the fact that the practice is not in accordance with tho rules of the> United Kingdom Associations.
