RAILWAYS NEEDED
IN AUSTRALIA’S NORTBf ' EXPERT. SUBMITS REPORT, By Telegraph.—Pres* Assn.—Copyright. MELBOURNE, August 14. A report by Sir George Buchanan upon his investigations regarding the development of the Northern Territory has oeen tabled in tne House of flepra sentatives. Sir George advocates the construction of railways to link up the Territory with Queensland, and thence from Camooweal with the New South Wales line at _ Bourke. This would bring Sydney into direct communication with the Territory. Such lines would be valuable as a means of defence. He suggests 'be immediate commencement. of this work, and also the improvement of Port Darwin. The future of the Territory depends largely upon the proper development of the pastoral industry. The climate is trying to whites, but could be made suitable to them within certain limits. Closer settlement within the coastal area would probably prove disastrous. Sir George stresses the point that all questions connected with the Territory should be kept out of the political arena, and all should work together for its development.
