LIFE IN THE COUNTRY
WITH ADVANTAGES OF. CITY WHAT BROADCASTING MEANS. Reference was node by Sir Jmnee Parr at the reunion of the Post and Telegraph Department’s officers last evening to the contract recently completed py the Government in connection with broadcasting. ’’When I was approached about this matter I rather shied off it at first,” said Sir, James. “It did not seem to me that it was a thing that the Post and Telegraph Department could very well .take one. But after I hhd been worried about it for a week I began to get interested in it, and eventml'y resched the position where as a business man I was concerned only with the desire to give the people of New Zealand the best service possible. We have now signed a five years’ contract, which will, I can say confidently, give the people of New Zealand one of the most excellent services in the world. For 30s pen year any man, woman, or child in. New Zealand can have the best concerts and lectures given in any part of New Zealand brought to their doors. I consider that this is one of the most civilising influences which has been brought into this country. The difficulty has been found of getting people to go into the back blocks; the lure of the pavements, and the appeal of the picture theatres keeps them drained to the town 3. I think we have arranged a service which will bring the advantages of the town to the man in the back blocks, and make life in the country ir finitely mors popular.”
