PAINLESS EXTRACTION
DENTISTRY AND MODERN MUSIC.
In the barf old days the only way a dentist could operate painlessly was either to stun his patient with a club or to frighten him or her into unconsciousness. As these were not popular methods, it wae usual with a class of very fancy operators to have a band in attendance. By playing tlie jazz music of the times with great energy, the band persuaded tlie neighbouring public that the proceedings were entirely - joyful, .and at the same time camouflaged the patient’s agony if that happened to be noisv in expression. Naturally, this peculiar form of anaesthesia had to be paid for as well as the dentist’s skill. Nowadays it is not customary to have a band, and the extraction of a tooth is no more painful than pulling cash out of one’s pocket to pay for it. It is almost enjoyable. Having induced the readier to go so far into this paragraph, the writer proposes a little painless extraction for Saturday night with the promise that the effects will be enjoyable in the extreme. A concert is to be given at the Grand Dpera House by the .Commercial Travellers’ male choir, and a number <f the leading entertainers of the citv in aid of the Karitane Hospital Fund. It will be bo much more than worth the monev that those who hear it may fre moved to send the difference forward for the fund. The concert is a benefit in the full sense of the term. The theatre is given, by Messrs J. C. Williamson. Ltd., and the Bristol Piano Company is lending, a grand niano free r# rh»rge. The Commercial Travellers’ choir has thrown itself heartily into the <-ork of organising tb.-. entertainment, and a spendid programme has been arranged. Tlie company of soWste is ns strong as could be gathered in Wellington The Karitane Fund is now past the £7500 mark.
