MARAROA DELAYED
BREAKDOWN IN ENGINE-ROOM. The Union Company’s ferry steamer Mararoa on her trip from Lyttelton to Wellington on Monday night had a minor breakdown m her engineroom which, delayed the vessel some hours. It appears that' the bottom end brass burnt out, and it was necessary to replace this before the vessel could resume her way. The Mararoa did not berth until 3 p.m. yesterday, and left again at 8.35 p.m. last evening on her return trip to Lyttelton. SURVEY LABOUR MEMBER’S THREAT “IF ANYTHING DID HAPPEN.” Mr E. J. Howard (Christchurch South), who was a passenger on the Mararoa from Lyttelton yesterday, referred to the break-down of the steamer last night. He said he had the unfortunate experience of being “marooned on that terrible ship, the Mararoa.” She broke down off the Kaikouras, and she broke down again outside the Heads yesterday. He urged the Minister for Marine to have a survey of this ship made before a occurred. When the vessel was off Kaikoura the machinery hroke down. If they had had a bad night such as they recently had, what would have happened ? They were close inshore, and with a nortli-east wind blowing into Kaikoura they would be on a very dangerous rock with a ship helpless in the middle of the night. If that ship was not in a fit state to go 10 sea she should he put out of commission. If anything did happen he had put this on record, and' he would hold them for manslaughter.
