A SHORTHORN GEM
In the illustration is shown 3691 S Denton Betty, a Shorthorn heifer which created something of a sensation at the Royal Show in England. Describing the clas9, an English writer says: —The class of heifers calved on or after April Ist was noteworthy chiefly because of the outstanding merit of one exhibit. In Denton Betty Mr Arthur Green, Green, Ben Rhyd ding, Deeds, ipresentfedl as fine a. heifer as has ever been seen at a Royal or any other show. From the moment she e n tered the ring this wonderful daughter of Collyn i e Lavende x King was a favourite with the public, and she gained in popularity th 6 longer end closer she was examined. Of critics she had none, for the simple reason that she was deemed to be without fault; that is, as judged on the ordinary scale appropriate to living animals. Her outline is wonderfully correct, her breed character all that could be desired, while in touch and coat she is as gratifying to the hand as in other respects sho is to the eye. It is just possible that she may become a little uneven at the tail, but even to say this implies an exacting search for something to say in mitigation of the general paean or praise. So enamoured of the qualities and claims of this remarkable heifer were both judges and public that she romped eomfortablv into the proud position of fern-ale champion at the tender age of no less than 15 months, and, eniuuly remarkable, she was nlaced reserve to the invincible Bridgobunk Paymaster for the suoreme breed championship. Championship honours have been won bv yearling heifers on former occasion*—by Mr Deane M lllis with Golden Garland at Derby in 1906, and by the late Queen Victoria at Mudstone in 1899, with Cicely* but the success of Mr Green's wbtulerful little heifer is unique because of hex age.
