TRAMWAY FEEDERS
’BUSES FOR DUNEDIN. The tramways committee of the Dunedin City Council have recommended to the council that authority be granted to purchase an additional 12 motor ’buses, each having a seating capacity of 21 passengers. The committee is of the opinion that it is desirable that these additional vehicles should be obtained more particularly with the object of assisting to cope with the abnormal demands that will be in evidence during the Exhibition period. As provision for the expenditure has not been made during the current financial year, the matter has been referred to the finance committee for report on the financial p.specj, in terms of the standing orders
In connection with the above, .the finnnee committee reports; “Pursuant to "the provisions of Standing Order No. 137, the finance committee is required to report upon tho proposal oi the tramway committee to acquire 12 additional motor ’buses, at. an .estimated cost of £IO,OOO. The £IOO.OOO tramway loan that was authorised last year included a sum of £IB.OOO for tailless ’buses, and fori motor ’buses to serve those parts of the district , that were not served, or not adequately served, by existing tramways-. Already £9OOO of that sum has either heen spent or ear-inarked for • six motor ’buses. Youi committee lias to report therefore, that, at least for the time being, the proposed expenditure of £IO.OOO on the additional 12 ’buses be a charge on the balance of the authorisation of £IB,OOO. any shortage to meet the actual cost being drawn from the current year s revenue of the tramway account.” The foregoing recommendation is to be regarded meanwhile as tentative and subject to review at the end of tile present financial year, when the revenue account of the tramways for the current year shall have been definitely determined. The committee is not in a position to report on the financial bearing of the proposal apart from the source from which the capital expenditure i« to he provided in .the meanwhile.
